A.A. Central Office is now open 4 days each week

The Capital District Central Office is now open during 4 days each week. Our current hours, allowing curbside pickup, are:

Monday 2:00PM - 6:00PM
Wednesday 5:00PM - 8:00PM
Thursday 2:00PM - 6:00PM
Saturday 12:00PM - 4:00PM

The Central Office is continuing to recruit volunteers. If you have any interest in helping out please visit our volunteer campaign link which will enable you to express interest online.

This month's newsletter has volunteer listings for both a Night Owl; taking phone calls at home, and an Alternate Data Coordinator. Please considering joining the CDCO as a Volunteer

Night Owl – The Night Owls are AA volunteers who take phone calls at home that are forwarded from the Central Office phone during the hours the Office is closed. A minimum of one year of continuous sobriety is suggested for this position.

MEETINGS - Please help keep them up to date.

A number of meetings have changed to in-person from online. Some in-person meetings have temporarily closed, and some have gone hybrid.

The Central Office maintains an informal list of meeting changes, however this list is kept as a quick reference until changes are updated on the Area 48 Meeting schedule.

It is important that you update your group's meeting information on the HMB Area 48 Website.
This is where everyone looks for meeting information.

The CDCO Hotline relies on the Area 48 Schedule when callers request information on meetings.

The CDCO is in need of a Night Owl Helpline Volunteer

Night Owl
Being a Night Owl represents an opportunity to help the still suffering alcoholic, and to provide meeting and A.A. information to interested callers. The Central Office helpline number is forwarded to your phone. The CDCO has a need for such a volunteer to work two days each month: bi-weekly on Wednesdays from 6:00 PM – 10:00 AM Thursdays. Backup volunteers are available should you be unable to cover a shift due to personal reasons.
It is definitely a great way to be of service to A.A. If you use a cell phone you can answer calls from virtually anywhere. If you use a Smartphone, you can also have access to 12th step lists, meeting lists, log calls for follow up, and have access to other recovery resources through the CDCO’s secure Volunteer Website. You will receive a training session prior to doing this service.
Help carry A.A.’s message to the alcoholic in need. Two years of continuous sobriety is suggested.
Longtimers

District 1 Functions Committee

On April 17th, District 1 sponsored its very first (hopefully annual) Longtimers’ Speaker Jam -- virtual, of course.

We had eight, Capital Region A.A. members come forward (two women and six men) -- each with 40 or more years of continuous sobriety -- for a total of 370 years! They shared their experience, strength, and hope for 15 minutes each.

It was an incredibly moving and spiritual experience for us, and the other A.A. members who attended. A couple of takeaways were: The A.A. program works, IF we are willing to continuously do the work; and it, truly, is a lifelong journey.

Living out our “primary purpose” as outlined in Tradition 5, was a common theme heard from all the speakers. We are, once again, grateful for the support of our Capital District Central Office, and for the opportunity to serve Alcoholics Anonymous.

The Digital 7th Tradition

The CDCO can help your group to go digital and collect online contributions from your group members.

We know that many groups still have expenses like rent and literature, but since they are not meeting in person, the basket is not being passed.

We also know that it can be challenging to mix personal and group funds in the treasurer's personal bank account.

Please reach out to us if you are interested in learning more about possible Digital 7th Traditions options.

Carrying the message

The Central Office received a 143 calls for help during the month of April. One of our primary deliverables is to provide a [7x24x365] helpline service for callers in need. We also receive calls from persons looking for meeting information, A.A. literature, and details on Alcoholics Anonymous in general. We maintain an anonymous log of calls so that when volunteers take a shift answering the helpline phones, they can review call information that could be important should an individual call a number of times. A sample of calls received in April is presented in our Reports section of the CDCO website. Please take a look to get an idea of what goes on.
